FireSmoke Canada

Welcome to the Canadian portal for information about wildland fire weather and smoke. From here you can access the BlueSky Canada smoke forecasts, fire weather forecasts, fire information, and the BlueSky Playground. The Weather Forecast Research Team at the University of British Columbia produces these research forecasts with support from multiple agencies. These tools and data serve professionals in the air quality, health & safety, emergency management, and science & research communities as well as the public. We are also a community of practice that advances policies, plans & organizations to address wildland fire and smoke issues.

Video Tutorials

July 22, 2021     Four video tutorials are now available, covering interpretation of the smoke and fire weather forecasts as well as using the Playground. These tutorials can be viewed on the WFRT BlueSky Tutorials playlist.
New Smoke Forecasts
March 31, 2021     The four BlueSky Canada daily smoke forecasts have been upgraded with a larger domain incorporating more emissions sources, improved meteorology over the larger domain, and produced using the new BlueSky Pipeline (BSP) modelling framework. The BSP framework improves emissions modelling and the integration of carryover smoke from previous forecasts, and positions BlueSky Canada to take advantage of new plume rise research and model development currently underway to further improve the smoke forecasts. View the current smoke forecast at firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/.
New Fire Weather Forecasts
March 31, 2021     The beta version of the BlueSky Canada Fire Weather Forecast (FWF) model is now operational and producing daily forecasts. The FWF is an implementation of the Fire Weather Index (FWI) System using BlueSky Canada gridded metorological forecasts, providing high-resolution spatial and temporal FWI forecast output for use in operational wildfire models and wildfire incident command briefings. The FWF is available as an interactive map with point forecast functionality and active model comparison to observed meteorology and FWI values. View the current FWF forecast at firesmoke.ca/forecasts/fireweather/current/.

Yesterday morning there were more than 555 forest wildfires in BC. Most all BC is covered in forest fire smoke and the AQHI – Air Quality Index has often exceeded 10+ . We now have a Stage 4 Drought in much of our rain forest [Drought Information Bulletins ]. [Angling Closure Information Bulletins . ] The smoke is coming to Metro Vancouver from all points of the compass: - from the north: the entire region (CBC News Report); from east: Keremeos , the Okanagan Valley and Oregon and Washington State; from the south: from the west and south-west Washington Olympic Peninsula and most all of Vancouver Island.

The cool rain and wind coming in from Haida Gwaii are refreshing, but not for long ~ lightning and wind.
