Walley & Me, Two Old Guys Flying Around

Dedicated to Leonard Thor for picking up a stranger at McGillvery and helping him get sorted.

Wally Mulligan and I first met at a meeting of the North Vancouver Kiwanis in the late 1990s.  I was a Director and the Treasurer of Kiwanis at that time.

Wally and I became friends; later he became one of my heroes and mentors.   He had been a great supporter of Kiwanis, often holding the highest office, over many, many years.

Wally was also a most excellent, experienced author, raconteur, naturalist, outdoorsma
n, and wildlife photographer. He and his family were studying the range and location and specialized in photographing mountain sheep.

After getting to know Wally a little better, I asked him if he would like to come flying with me.  Yes!  Since we were nearing our end of days, I decided to make this flying trip one of special significance to Wally.  Wally's call sign for this trip was Whiskey Alpha Lima Lima Yankee.  Wally died a little while after this flight. I miss him.

My wonderful niece, Sarah and her family, hosted us while we overnighted in 100 Mile House, BC.

(1:09 minutes) this is a great work by another citizen photo-journalist

Jason Gendron (on his YouTube Channel). He also has a collection of beautiful photographs on his Facebook page.
Yesterday morning there were more than 555 forest wildfires in BC. Most all BC is covered in forest fire smoke and the AQHI – Air Quality Index has often exceeded 10+ . We now have a Stage 4 Drought in much of our rain forest [Drought Information Bulletins ]. [Angling Closure Information Bulletins . ] The smoke is coming to Metro Vancouver from all points of the compass: - from the north: the entire region (CBC News Report); from east: Keremeos , the Okanagan Valley and Oregon and Washington State; from the south: from the west and south-west Washington Olympic Peninsula and most all of Vancouver Island.

The cool rain and wind coming in from Haida Gwaii are refreshing, but not for long ~ lightning and wind.

Over Lynn Valley - Tsleil-Waututh Nation©
August 15, 2018 Post Updated: Wild forest fire smoke is back. (This Award Wining Video taken, edited and uploaded last summer, August 2, 2017.)

Smoke from forest fires moving into the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Metro Vancouver, Victoria and, indeed, the entire province.

This award is appreciated. It is nice to win awards, again; even if it is one of the shortest videos that I have ever produced.

Please note that, to you, the video may seem out of focus.  I am videographing the middle space, between the camera lens and the flower, to look for the plant pollinators and their predators.  Those guys are very small and very fast.  There are two photograph albums linked below that are in better focus.

Lovely to look at, but remember that these are poisonous plants* -- do not allow children, pets or yourself ingest any of part of the azaleas or rhododendrons.
*The Full Story
One of the earliest accounts of mass poisoning dates back to the first century BCE when Roman troops were allegedly poisoned with honey by the Heptakometes of Turkey.  The Roman soldiers were reported to be confused and vomiting and subsequently defeated in battle after eating the honey's Grayanotoxins.  We now believe that they were given honey made from the nectar of the
flowering Rhododendron luteum.
The Music: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor, S.244/2, is the second in a set of 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies by composer Franz Lisztand is by far the most famous of the set.  Sergei Rachmaninoff playing The Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, recorded in 1919 by Edison Records

In both the original piano solo form and in the orchestrated version this composition has enjoyed widespread use in animated cartoons. Its themes have also served as the basis of several popular songs.

It was getting dark and I was hoping to catch some of the night pollinators: ants, bats, moths etc. and I did not want bright light to scare them away.
